Raytheon Professional Services leverages Raytheon Six Sigma™ toward international growth in Asia

Raytheon Six Sigma experts host China ISSSP in North Amercian visit

By Bernie Saboe, Performance Consultant, R6s® Master Expert

In February 2010, the International Society of Six Sigma Professionals (ISSSP) hosted the Aviation Industries of China (AVIC) and China Aviation Industry Corporation (CAIC) on a North American Six Sigma Benchmarking Tour. The nine day tour included a site visit to Honeywell Aerospace in Phoenix, AZ, meetings with the U.S. Department of Defense in Washington, DC and a R6s Workshop with RPS at the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum.

Most attendees were research and engineering vice presidents and directors whose duties include six sigma training and deployment within their organizations. Susan Lu, Bill Russell and Bernie Saboe of RPS provided an introduction to the training solution capabilities we employ in China. As part of the R6s workshop, visitors toured the Donald D. Engen Air Control Tower at the Udvar-Hazy Museum at Dulles airport. Raytheon sponsors the air traffic control exhibit and many of our products are showcased in the air tower.

ISSSP President, Roxanne Britland, also participated in the event and invited RPS to present at the 10th Annual ISSSP Leadership Conference June 28 – July 1. Ms. Britland said she believes the RPS Performance Consulting team’s InnovationStation Experience and Visual Thinking offerings will provide high value for executive leaders attending the conference in Scottsdale, Arizona.

  Cultural Differences, Common Language

While most visitors spoke some English, the Chinese – English language barrier was quickly overcome by using familiar terms and interactive exercises found within R6s. This common language for continuous improvement is universal and enabled the participants to understand the content quickly. The challenges that this Chinese team have with training and deployment are similar to those of many large organizations but on a much larger scale. Their organization includes 436,000 people in all aspects of aviation.

The group expressed interest in learning more about how RPS manages large scale training engagements and how to manage large volumes of training records. The RPS team forged a new and positive relationship with another international organization that may create opportunities for future business. RPS’ China office has extended its hand to AVIC and CAIC, offering training services and consultancy.

The ISSSP participants’ host summarized the visit and said: “We are very impressed and enlightened by the arrangements and exchanged results from your distinguished company. Sincere thanks to all your efforts. The Six Sigma deployment through the whole China Aviation Group needs to be improved and we hope we can obtain a long term support from you during this long term improvement process. Again, I would like to thank you for your support!"
